How to Fix Bad Basketball Shooting Habits Through Guided Repetition
Basketball players today are surrounded by training devices, shooting tools, and “quick fixes” that promise to improve their jump shot overnight. Many of these products rely on gimmicks that temporarily change a player’s motion without truly teaching how a proper shooting pattern should work.
TruRep was created to solve that problem.
TruRep is AI-powered player development technology designed to guide players toward pure shooting mechanics while they train.
Created by former NBA shooting coach Wesley Horne, TruRep was built with a simple mission:
“To help as many players as possible. I grew up without the funds to afford training and had no way of reaching someone with expertise who could teach me. Today I help more than 2,600 players in Charleston, South Carolina. In person, I can coach maybe 10, 30, or 50 players at a time. But with TruRep, I can help players from every corner of the world.”
Coach Horne grew up in rural Alabama with very limited access to basketball instruction. One of his only sources of guidance was watching Inside the NBA with Ahmad Rashad.
Those early experiences shaped his vision for player development. Over the past 14 years, he developed TruRep to help players everywhere learn proper shooting mechanics and eliminate common shooting flaws.
His purpose is simple:
“I see myself in these kids who respect the game and want to be the best at it. This drive pushes me to produce better players every day as a professional player development coach. This is a blessing from God, and my duty as a Christian is to be a relentless steward of it.”
Coach Horne leads player development programs through Dynamic Sports Team in Charleston, South Carolina.
How TruRep Works
TruRep uses Apple Watch technology to guide players toward proper shooting mechanics.
Players wear their Apple Watch on the non-shooting wrist. This allows TruRep to detect guide-hand movement and help eliminate one of the most common shooting problems in basketball:
Thumb flick from the guide hand.
TruRep also helps players build consistent rhythm and shooting patterns through repetition and feedback.
Why Young Players Benefit From TruRep
Young players often develop poor shooting habits because they begin shooting before learning proper mechanics.
TruRep allows players—especially those 10 years old and under—to train without even using a basketball.
This allows them to focus on:
• Proper hand placement
• Correct shooting mechanics
• Smooth shooting rhythm
Learning the correct movement pattern first builds a much stronger foundation for long-term shooting success.
How to Start Training With TruRep
Getting started with TruRep is simple.
Step 1
Download the TruRep App from the Apple App Store on your iPhone.
Step 2
Make sure TruRep connects to your Apple Watch. With a good Wi-Fi connection, this typically happens automatically within a few minutes.
Step 3
Open the TruRep app on your Apple Watch and make sure the sound is turned on if you want audible feedback.
Step 4
Select your non-shooting wrist.
For example, right-handed players should select Left Wrist.
Step 5
Start with your hands in the shooting pocket in front of your chest as if holding a basketball.
Step 6
Go through your shooting motion.
Step 7
Finish your follow-through and hold both hands in the air for one second.
Step 8
Return to the shooting pocket and repeat.
Think of it like jump rope for your shooting mechanics. When used correctly, TruRep helps players strengthen the movement pattern that produces great shooting.
Real-Time Feedback. Real Player Development.
TruRep gives players live feedback while they train, helping them immediately understand whether their mechanics are correct.
No gimmicks.
No forced arm positions.
No shortcuts.
Nothing to hinder feel or movement when shooting.
Just technology guiding players toward better shooting mechanics through repetition.
